Rideshare Accidents 101: Your First 5 Action Items

Hailing a rideshare such as an Uber or Lyft is about convenience - but it’s increasingly becoming a liability.

According to a 2018 research study from the University of Chicago and Rice University, the rise of the rideshare has increased traffic deaths by over 1,000 mortalities annually since 2011.

While reading to prepare yourself in the event of a rideshare accident may seem morbid, you’ll find from a personal injury perspective that it’s a worthy and important use of your time.

So, what should you do in the event of a rideshare accident? Read on to find out.

Attend to your health and safety and minimize personal injury

  • Do what you can to get the rideshare vehicle to the side of the road.

  • Nothing is more important than your health and physical wellbeing. If you’re injured, seek medical treatment.

Gather what information is available

  • Find out as much as your driver will tell you. If possible, try to obtain the following information:

  • The driver’s name

  • The name of any other driver involved in the accident

  • Driver’s personal contact information (a phone number is best)

  • Vehicle license plate number, make, model and year

  • License plate number, make, model and year of all other vehicles involved in the accident if any

  • Auto insurance carrier names and policy numbers of ever driver involved in the accident

Document as much as you can in case of personal injury litigation

  • Take photos of the following things if possible:

  • Rideshare vehicle including all areas of damage

  • Other vehicles involved in the accident

  • Be sure to hang onto a document or screenshot of your Lyft or Uber receipt.

Report your rideshare accident to the appropriate bureaus

Whether it’s you or another party that contacts the police, make sure you talk to the investigating police officer when they arrive on the scene. Ask how you can obtain a copy of the accident crash report.

Be cooperative with the investigating police officer, and answer all questions they may have regarding the incident
